Society Lecture

Raymond Williams

2 senses of 'society':

  • Overarching term for the institutions and relationships between the world
  • An abstract term for life
Society is a human project

The State effects society - Control and conditioning
Distinguishes people and behaviours but more importantly life and how people live

Revisited Ken Garland's - 'First Things First Manifesto'
1964
Use talent to help and serve the interests of the people.

Adbusters, 2000 - Use skills (design) to help fight capitalism

However, wouldn't it be better if people were educated to help themselves

Social Tithe

How do we determine what is socially responsible/acceptable?
= ETHICS

Williams:
  • Subjective Relativism
There are no universal moral norms of right an wrong. All persons decide right and wrong for themselves.
  • Cultural Relativism
The ethical theory that what's right and wrong depends on place and/or time.
  • Divine command theory
Good actions are aligned with the will of a God.
Bad actions are contrary to the will of God.
The holy book helps make decisions.

Immanuel Kant - Kantvanism

People's will should be based on moral rules.
Actions based on appropriate moral rules.

Categorical Imperative

1- 'Act only from moral rules that you can at the same time universalise'
Basically if you act on a moral rule that would cause problems if everyone followed it then your actions are not moral.

2- If you use people for your own benefit that is not moral.

Utilitarianism
