The New Cranbrook Design Discourse

Lorraine Wild

'Though serious designers were not supposed to be paying attention to form, some were definitely bothered by the universal use of "Helvetica-on-a-grid" for everything from corporate communications to the covers of avant-garde jazz albums'. P31-32

'Serious doubts about the function of the International Style as a means of visual communication led to a great deal of ironic experimentation and violation of style.' - P32

This is evidence to suggest that formalised aesthetic became such a norm that designers began to break away from objective visual communication which lead to 'ironic experimentation and violation of styles'.
